NEWS EDITORIAL Richard Barnes Editor-In-Chief Watching New Channels Jens Heithecker, IFA Executive Director; Dr Alexander Pett, CEO of gfu Consumer & Home Electronics; Hans-Joachim Kamp Chairman of the Supervisory Board of gfu Consumer & Home Electronics; Miss IFA, Dr Christian Göke, Messe Berlin CEO and Dirk Koslowski, IFA Senior Executive Manager (left to right) It is evident that all retailers visiting IFA 2017 already have roadmaps for the season and indeed years to come. Much like with a GPS however, from time to time, one’s route has to be recalculated, based on new ways to the end destination. IFA is a great platform for exchange between top players in the market on both the supply and distribution sides of the coin, not to mention watching what the neighbours are doing. Retailers can recalculate their company roadmaps based on new information or innovative ideas, and by the same token, vendors can change their roadmaps based on important feedback from the retailers. It is now evident that consumers are increasingly in need of detailed advice in-store, due to the onset of smart home – and other “connected” technologies, which are still far from being “plug & play”. The only way to really ensure successful installations on a broader scale is to increasingly employ in-store and roving experts who are able to help buyers understand the whys and wherefores of this new gear. Along with the concept of omni-channel and / or multichannel, it’s a change in paradigm for retailers – who now have to consider staff restructuring, training and – in some cases – the use of external resources in order to meet the real needs of the customer. In some cases, important restructuring is also taking place, such as the case of Dixons Carphone over the past year or so, or the creation last year of Fnac Darty in France, which has now been made even more interesting with the inclusion of Ceconomy in the game. More of the same is no doubt due to come … so as they say, “watch this channel”! IFA Global Markets Open for Business IFA Global Markets, Europe’s one-of-akind opportunity for manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers officially opened for business on September 3 at STATION-Berlin. Spread across four days, the unique event brings IFA suppliers, component manufacturers, OEMs and ODMs into contact with customers and partners from the consumer electronics and home appliances industries. A ribbon cutting ceremony took place with special guests Dr. Christian Göke, Chief Executive Officer Messe Berlin, and Hans- Joachim Kamp, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of gfu, joined by Miss IFA to do the honours. In addition to a packed marketplace of international companies, IFA Global Markets is also hosting a series of “Expert Talks” involving some of the most accomplished international buyers in consumer electronics, consumer IT and home appliances. Speaking to IFA International, IFA director Jens Heithecker said: “In our industries, there is a huge network of suppliers behind our brands. So we needed a specialised B2B event like IFA Global Markets for suppliers to OEM and ODM companies. It is essential to reflect and consider the needs of this important segment.” Although the event is only in its second year, Heithecker said it is sold out. “The important thing for us now is to ensure the right quality of visitors and activities,” he added. Participants at IFA Global Markets showcase ondemand solutions and technologies in addition to consumer electronics and home appliances. International buyers attending include Tobias Redlin, managing director of iGo3D; Rebecca Fuchs, head of Retail Sales at Nimans; and Mike Lange, MD of wireless smart home solutions distributor Z-Wave Europe IFA International is a CLEVERDIS Publication • 65 avenue Jules Cantini - Tour Méditerranée – 13006 Marseille, France • Tel: + 33 442 77 46 00 •Fax: + 33 442 77 46 01 • SARL capitalised at e155,750 • VAT FR 95413604471 • RCS Marseille 413 604 471 • info@cleverdis.com • www.cleverdis.com • During IFA: Press Center – Hall 6.3 – Room 201 • Tel: +49(0) 30 3038 81332 • info@ifa-international.org • www.ifa-international.org • Publisher: Gérard Lefebvre • Publishing Director: Jean-Guy Bienfait • Managing Director: Jean-François Pieri • Project Manager: Bettina Badon • Editor-in-Chief: Richard Barnes • Editorial Coordination: Pauline Cazanova • Editorial team: Stuart Braun, Neil Crossley, Andy Fry, Simon King, Julian Newby • Photos: Stéphane Lelarge • Art Director: Hélène Beunat • Design & Page Setting: Guillaume Vinrich • Marketing Manager: Nathalie Meissner • With the participation of: Quentin Ankri, Naila Ben Ghorbal, Melina Maniura, Robin Presthus, Wenchao Wang • To contact them : first name.last name@ifa-international.org • Printing: Möller Druck und Verlag GmbH, Ahrensfelde OT Blumberg, Germany • Cover: © Fnac Darty © CLEVERDIS 2017 - Registration of Copyright September 2017 Information presented in this publication is purely indicative in order to illustrate subjects contained therein.
