SMART WORLD CityCube Berlin 5 Sept. 2016 2:25pm - 3:20pm Beyond Wearables The human body in the connected domain In the IFA+Summit Smart World session “The Next Level of Mobility and Connectivity”, Hannes Sjoblad, Tech Activist & Bodyhacker takes wearables one step further. Sjöblad (@hsjob) is a professional tech trend analyst and advisor and a cofounder of the Swedish biohackers association Bionyfiken. He will share stories and insights from his personal work with human chip implants and related technologies - as well as hacks performed by the broader biohacker movement. His message is that when we talk about the Internet of Things we often think about gadgets, cars and connected home appliances. But there are great benefits to be made from including the human body into the domain of the connected. Connecting the body goes way beyond fitness wearables and medical uses – what we are seeing is a generation of perfectly healthy persons who are beginning to upgrade their bodies with technology in order to give their bodies new abilities. “I will be sharing my insights on human augmentation technologies from the forefront of bio-hacking”, explains Sjoblad, adding, “The biohacker movement is a very dynamic community of individuals who work outside of the traditional environments of academia and large corporations.” The driving factor behind the entire biohacker movement is the democratisation of modern biotechnology such as DNA-analysis equipment and wearable sensors. “Tech that was very expensive ten years ago is now becoming very affordable and there are many parallels to when computers became household items in the 1980”, insists Sjoblad. “We should inspire people to familiarise themselves with the amazing opportunities for which this democratisations open up.” The IFA+Summit is, says Sjoblad, a great opportunity: “Since the world is changing faster all the time, it is more important than ever to understand the ongoing changes. But add in the latest display technology of 4K, wireless audio and virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR), and the Living Room transformation is under way. SMARTER, WIRELESS AND 4K This year Funai Electric of Japan announced it will stop making the last of the world's VCR recorders. While that finally signals the end for an era already long gone, we just passed the newest milestone of change in the living room in early 2016. IHS predicts more than half of all the TV households in Japan, United States, United Kingdom, France and Germany will have smart TVs by 2019. “Increasing demand for 4K resolution, the debut of high dynamic range (HDR) for both hardware and content, and access to streaming content that supports these features will accelerate smart TV demand Global TV sales in m units 226 231 239 114 95 97 104 82 90 73 52 31 10 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 globally,” said Hisakazu Torii, Senior Director of Consumer Device Research for IHS Technology. In mature markets, consumers now migrate to a growing number of internet-based alternatives. These include Roku, Amazon, Apple, Google, Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, SlingTV, Sony, HBO and others. For example, this year, for the first ever time, Britons will spend more on video streaming subscriptions and film/TV downloads than on buying and renting DVDs. This migration by customers pushes pay TV providers (including fiber and satellitebased companies) and traditional broadcasters to adopt Internet standards for both video content and services. CHANGES IN AUDIO, TOO While home audio device shipments (including integrated hi-fi systems, AV receivers, docking stations, wireless speakers and soundbars) grew globally in 2015 by more than 10 million additional units, Strategy Analytics notes growth came almost entirely from consumer interest in wireless. Wireless speakers accounted for close to 50% of all home audio shipments in 2015. Bluetooth only speakers dominated (around 65% of sales)-- although the number of wi-fi and wi-fi/Bluetooth models is expanding as interest in multiroom audio grows. “Sonos has been the long-time leader in this sub-segment of the market but growing competition from hardware manufacturers such as Samsung, LG, Panasonic, Bose and Yamaha as well as technology vendors DTS, Qualcomm and Imagination Technologies will certainly help grow the market beyond its current niche," says Strategy Analytics. Home audio also has a voice now and that voice is Amazon Echo, whose launch also inspired competitor, Google Home. You can use your voice to command and stream your favorite song. The same voice-activated devices can add an event to your calendar or set the temperature of your thermostat-- placing audio nicely within the context of a smart home.
