Special Feature Stars of East Asia East Asia’s leading television manufacturers continue to streamline their manufacturing processes and refine their designs. Here, IFA International looks at three companies whose products are moving into the mainstream worldwide. Haier aims higher with LED Haier has introduced a new television range at IFA this year. The Chinese giant is using the event to show off its expertise in the brown-goods sector — a market that it entered in 1997, producing sets for both consumers and professionals. “Haier has been present in Europe for some years with its LCD and LED televisions, and is introducing an expanded and innovation-filled range at IFA this year,” said René Aubertin, CEO for Haier Europe. He added: “During the first quarter of 2010, Haier put some distance between itself and its competitors by launching LED TVs in 19-, 22- and 24-inch sizes. This allowed us to reinforce our position in the market and promote products with various high-end features, including Timeshift functions, recordable USB keys and built-in TNT Full-HD decoders. In order to solidify its position in the sector, Haier’s current objective is to expand this range with larger screen sizes, unique 3D designs and Internet access.” Hall 25 Stand 134 Funai goes back to the future Inspired by the mastery of generations of sword-makers, the Katana series of LED TVs from Japan’s Funai blends traditional craftsmanship with the 21st century technology. Set to launch in late winter, Katana will come in 19- and 22-inch models. Bigger TVs will follow early in 2011. Hannspree’s age of elegance The SV-series by Hannspree is being debuted at IFA in the China Hall. The manufacturer’s comprehensive lineup of LED TVs range from 19-inch through to 42-inch, all of which are wrapped in stylish, ultra-slim cases. SV-series sets are designed to blend in to a modern interior as unobtrusively as possible through elegant, minimalist design, which includes a tempered glass base. The TVs also include X-Contrast technology to boost contrast levels, which results in more lifelike pictures and considerably improves the viewer experience during dark scenes. The highcontrast technology reaches 4.750,000:1 in the larger SV models. Hannspree’s X-Celerate technology, meanwhile, produces ultra-rapid response times, which ensures fluid, vibrant and crisp screen action. The company is also demonstrating its Vivid Motion 100Hz technology, which produces a double frame rate and ensures that the SV-series benefits from the smoothest frameby-frame picture transitions without flicker or blur. The SV-series also includes DVB-T and DVB-C digital systems, CI+ and Dolby surround sound, HDMI ports, and USB port for playback of MP3, JPEG and video files. The new LED are based on the uniquely Japanese concept of ‘following the path towards perfection’. Just like the samurai sword, the Katana brand is all about sharpness, technological excellence and boldness in design. The sword’s thin, precise blade is what inspired the Japanese engineers who were involved in creating the series.
