News It’s Time

News It’s Time EDITORIAL Richard Barnes Editor-In-Chief The incredible rise of China as a superpower in all economic sectors, but particularly in the fields of consumer electronics, home appliances, IT and ICT is no secret to anyone. And certain ambitions that might have brought a smile in the past are today increasingly evident. Thus, when Richard Ren, President, Consumer Western Europe, Huawei (see interview p15) announced that the objective of his company is to be number one in three to five years’ time, one sits up and pays attention. In this context, it seems evident that China, as the powerhouse of Asia, should have its own global trade event in the image of IFA, here in Germany, the powerhouse of Europe. Once again, it’s thanks to human relations such as those fostered between Dr Christian Göke – CEO of Messe Berlin and Guo Limin – Director-General – Economy, Trade and Information Commission of Shenzhen Municipality, that this great project will see the light of day. It’s sure. With China, now is the time. This great nation’s electrical and electronics manufacturers have come to play at the head table, and at the same time, Chinese and Asian middle and high-end consumers are voracious for premium products. Yes, it’s the right moment. Now IFA has found the right gateway to launch out into this territory, and most importantly, the right people. And what a thrill for all those involved to be part of writing an exciting new chapter in the history books of global commerce and industry. Kindling Trade Relations IFA’s new event in Shenzhen generates new East-West synergies The announcement of a new electronics trade event in Shenzhen organised by IFA new April comes after a long period of reflection and planning. Indeed, Messe Berlin (organisers of IFA on behalf of the German trade organisation gfu Consumer and Home Electronics) already manage other successful shows in Asia, such as Fruit Logistica in Hong Kong and ITB Asia in Singapore. The show will foster new synergies between China and Germany, but more broadly, between Asia and Europe, and the rest of the world. We asked IFA executive director Jens Heithecker what the specific aims are for this show. We propose to bring international brands into the Chinese markets and to help them to create efficient contacts with the distribution structure, and to help them be promoted across China. The Chinese retailers have asked us to bring in more international premium brands. It’s like IFA in Europe when you see how many international manufacturers we bring into the European markets and the roadmap is now to bring them to the Jens Heitheker, IFA Executive Director Dr Chrisitan Göke, Chief Executive of Messe Berlin Cornelia Yzer, Berlin Senator for Economies, Technology and Research Limin Guo, Director General, Economy, Trade and Information Commission of Shenzhen Municipality Chinese market – the largest single market in the world – with more than a billion people and a rising middle class. It’s not another export show for Chinese manufacturers.
