He also writes columns that appear on CNET News, Huffington Post, Forbes.com and the San Jose Mercury News. This will be his fifth visit to IFA Berlin. Mr Magid is happy to leave behind his national market, the large mass market of America and its big journalistgrinding trade events for his visit to IFA in Berlin. “For me, IFA is more relaxed,” says Mr Magid, “I don’t have the pressure I would have in a domestic US event.“ That pressure includes his regular contributions to BBC World Service and often commentary for CNN, Fox News, and Al Jazeera. Mr Magid has also been a frequent contributor to the New York Times and was, for 18 years, a syndicated columnist for the Los Angeles Times. “I come to IFA because several large multinationals use it as a major product launch platform,” says Mr Magid. Mr Magid has a broad portfolio because he covers all of personal technology. “Sometimes I may wander to see what pops up at IFA but mostly I am targeting a very few products that I’ve already heard about and want to see. I think a large show is like an ocean and you wouldn’t get the best impression if you only sit on one beach. You need to see a show from different perspectives.” Mr Magid comes as part of the American press delegation and ShowStoppers, the official IFA press event, is one of his favourite stops. “The focus of ShowStoppers is helpful because it is not a random microcosm. Some big brands are there but often marginal products that can’t normally punch through the noise can break though there.” “Like most journalists, I rely on my industry colleagues to help point the way to what’s important to see at a show. The industry is just too big to assume you can see all of what’s new on your own. For example, I will glance each day at IFA International show daily and might decide where to go because of an article there.” He will attend IFA for four days and this year the new “wearables” category is a hot topic he expects to follow. www.ifa-international.org IFA International • Monday 2 nd September 2013 25
