News EDITORIAL Richard Barnes Editor-In-Chief Connecting the Dots It’s all about connecting machines… and people – but a lot more Connectivity is more than ever the big buzzword at IFA this year. Quite suitable as the show’s role is that of “connecting the dots” – in other words, “coming to understand the relationship between different ideas or experiences”. Indeed, what could better describe the “IFA experience”? As Dr Christian Göke, CEO of Messe Berlin, so beautifully put it in his opening press conference presentation, “It’s about product launches – yes – but it’s more about the people.” By bringing the right people to the fore, and allowing them to interact in the right way, the results can be astounding. But just how is IFA is developing this human connectivity or networking that Dr Göke insisted was so important? It starts on the show floor, by bringing the largest number of topline retail buyers and management together, in one place, with the biggest choice of manufacturers from around the globe – primarily from their headquarters and not just local representatives. No-where else can we find this volume and quality of contacts. It also comes from the inspiration and thought leadership instilled through the IFA+ Summit and the exceptional Keynotes at this show. And new understanding of “how things can work together” also comes from the record number of participants at IFA TecWatch – the birthplace of countless new ideas and applications. Yes, it’s all about connecting the dots. And when it comes to IFA, nobody does it better. IFA Opens in Style More than 600 exclusive guests celebrate the opening of the 55 th IFA The IFA 2015 opening gala held on September 3 at the Palais am Funkturm was awash with guests from industry, trade, politics, business and entertainment from all over the world, among them Natalia Wörner, Katja Flint, Christine Neubauer and Jana Pallaske. This glamorous celebration of the 55 th edition of the world’s most important trade fair for consumer electronics and home appliances was presented by TV personalities Jochen Schropp and Judith Rakers - who also had a good word for all exciting new products at IFA while walking red carpet. Günther H. Oettinger, European Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Society, Sigmar Gabriel, Federal Minister of Economy and Energy, Berlin's mayor Michael Müller and Hans- Joachim Kamp, Chairman of the Board of gfu Consumer & Home Electronics GmbH delivered the inspiring opening speeches, setting the mood for the actionpacked evening to come. Some of the top class musical entertainment was provided by local songstress Nena, who with 25 million albums sold worldwide remains one of the most successful artists in Germany, in addition to the Canadian rock band Jonas & The Massive Attraction. Other prominent guests at the gala included the actors Tessa Mittelstaedt, Jeanette Hain, Alexandra Kamp, Victor Schefé, Ralph Herforth, Anna and Nellie Thalbach, World Boxing Champion Arthur Abraham, and boxing legend Axel Schulz. Among the main IFA partners, members of Sengled, Oaxis, Jura, Felix, HOME, and Mercedes- Hans-Joachim Kamp, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of gfu; Michael Müller, the Governing Major of Berlin; Dr. Christian Göke, CEO, Messe Berlin GmbH (l.t.r.) Benz Berlin all attended the night-of-nights at the Palais am Funkturm. The 55 th IFA opening gala was a fitting way to kick off of the world’s largest consumer electronics and electronic household appliance trade show, and the perfect way to celebrate the latest trends and innovations in both sectors that will be showcased at IFA 2015.
