News EDITORIAL Richard Barnes Editor-In-Chief Attack of the Robots It might sound like something out of science fiction, but there’s nothing fictional about it. According to GfK, the market for robot cleaners is exploding in Europe, with the steeper part of the growth curve beginning last year. But the robot market is by no means easy to analyse, or to make firm projections. For the moment, the Netherlands, France and Spain are apparently leading the charge, with robots particularly popular in France. Robotic window cleaners are becoming popular, robotic pool cleaners have been around for a while, and now, such things as robotic roof gutter leaf-cleaners – avoiding blockages and even fire hazards, robotic lawnmowers, and more advanced kinds of robotic floor cleaners are all arriving. Where will this innovation lead us in the coming years, as we see, at the same time, the onset of the smart home? As outlined in the remarkable opening keynote by Samsung’s BK Yoon, we must be “prepared for a remarkable shift in the way we live”. Mr Yoon so rightly underlined the fact that technology will shape the future home allowing for more flexibility between work, learning and life in the home. It will protect us and make our lives more comfortable and enjoyable. And it will make our homes more responsive to us. The most critical role, says Mr Yoon, will be played by families and individuals who will shape the home of the future with their distinct needs and passions. As has happened at every IFA over the past 90 years, ideas are spawned, as the brightest tech brains in the world form a giant “mastermind group”, tapping into the incredible energy that emanates from the collective gathering of everamazed observers present at the show. Take special care this year at IFA to watch for the beginnings of these and many other amazing trends that will mark our lives in years to come. IFA Gala Celebrates 90 Years The night of nights dedicated to decades of innovation Around 600 guests from industry, politics, business and entertainment gathered at Berlin’s Palais am Funkturm to celebrate the opening of IFA 2014. The star guest on the red carpet was Hollywood leading lady Diane Kruger, who was arm-in-arm with actor boyfriend Joshua Jackson - the starlet earlier unveiled her plaque at Berlin’s Boulevard of Stars.
