News Samsung moves in on mobile PC market Performance meets design in next-generation laptops The new RF series of laptops feature high-end graphics functionality By Neil Crossley ‘Designed to go, powered to perform’ is the brand message of Samsung IT Solutions Business, unveiled at its mobile PC and printer launch on Thursday. The Korean giant announced three driving forces for growth – mobility, performance and design excellence – and revealed its intention to take a top-tier position in the mobile PC market. Patrick Povel, the company’s Global Senior Product Manager of Mobile Computing, demonstrated a range of new products that have been created in response to consumers’ diverse needs and increasingly mobile lifestyles. These products included the ML-1865W, described by Povel as “the world’s smallest wireless laser printer, 16% smaller than its nearest competitor”. Samsung also launched its QX series notebooks, a premium addition to its comprehensive mobile computing portfolio that is available in three screen sizes: 13.3-, 14- and 15.6-inches. Povel highlighted the need for family PCs to have high-end graphic functionality for gamers – a feature incorporated in Samsung’s new RF series of laptops. Equipped with Core i5-460M and Core i7-720QM CPUs and dual-bay hard-drive options, the RF510 has a 15.6-inch 1,366x768 display, while the larger RF710 is 17.3 inches at 1,600x900. The RF510, which features a NVIDIA GeForce 330M GPU and Core i5-460M processor, should retail at around €700. The RF710, with an i7-720M CPU, 640GB of storage and a Blu-ray drive, will be priced at just over €800. Other additions to Samsung’s mobile PC portfolio are the NF and SF series of netbooks and laptops. The NF210 is a 10.1-inch netbook with an Atom N455 processor, while the SF510 is a Core i3 laptop with a 15.6-inch screen and integrated Intel graphics. The SF and NF will be on sale from this October.. Hall 20 Stand 101 Grundig turns up the Mega Hertz Grundig comes to Berlin with 65 new products – 20 LED TVs, 12 audio devices, 14 personal-care products and 19 professional kitchen gadgets – in the year that it also celebrates its 65th anniversary as one of the best known brands in German electronics. The Nuremberg-based company’s stand-out products for 2010 include the 3D LED Fine Arts TVs, which are making their market debut at IFA. With 200Hz technology, full-HD resolution and screen diagonals of 46 and 55 inches, the Fine Arts series features Grundig’s 3D USB recording function. This enables viewers to download 2D or 3D broadcasts to a USB stick or on an external hard disk. Grundig also extends the concept of intelligent USB recording to the audio sector with the lifestyle CD stations Ovation 3 CDS 8000 ENC and Ovation CDS 8120 ENC, as well as the micro hi-fi system UMS 4950i. At the touch of a button, the devices copy audio and MP3 files – even radio programmes – on to a USB stick or SD(HC) card. But after 65 years of creating ‘MegaHertz excitement’ in the worlds of sound and vision, Grundig is now moving into a new market segment – kitchen appliances. The Cuisinery range of professional gadgets and the Black Line kitchen collection fuse intelligent function and robust performance with appealing design. The Cuisinery appliances are designed to make everyday kitchen chores that little bit simpler. The Black Line range, meanwhile, features nine kitchen appliances, including a mixer, a coffee-maker and a chic contact grill in black and stainless steel.
